Why the BACKLINEgearFinDR exists
“There is no ski that is the best for everyone!
A light beginner skiing hard spring snow needs a different ski than the experienced, heavier skier accompanying her.
That's why we test every year with a large test team in real conditions – and that's why there is the BACKLINEgearFinDR.
It combines our test results with your wishes, your skill and your starting point.
The BACKLINEgearFinDR is still in BETA mode – we are grateful for any feedback.”
Martin Fiala · Chief Editor, BACKLINE MagazinThe basis: carefully tested
Every recommendation is based on the results of the BACKLINE ski test: ski weight, tendency to ice up, and performance on hard and tracked snow, in powder and on corn – rated by our test team.
How the BACKLINEgearFinDR works
- 1
For whom?
Women's or men's skis – unisex models are always included.
- 2
Your use
Four questions about snow, focus, tours and ski characteristics determine your preferred width class.
- 3
Your snow
You choose the conditions you ski in.
- 4
You
Weight and skiing ability – compared with our test team's recommendation.
- Which skis does the BACKLINEgearFinDR compare?
- All published BACKLINE touring ski tests from 2025 and 2026. If the same model was tested more than once, the newest test counts.
- How is the order calculated?
- 80 % from the BACKLINE test performance in the criteria that matter to you (ascent and your chosen snow types), 20 % from your personal suitability: how well the test team's assessments match your skiing ability and body weight. These values are guidance, not rigid weight limits.
- How is the width class chosen?
- Four questions about snow, focus, tours and ski characteristics result in a preferred search direction: 80–90 mm, 90–100 mm or 100 mm+. The other classes are shown separately.
- What doesn't the BACKLINEgearFinDR do?
- It doesn't recommend a ski length, doesn't replace the BACKLINE overall rating from the magazine and doesn't guarantee that a ski fits. Missing test values count as "not tested", never as bad.
