OSLO, NORWAY (2026) — Whether on the slopes, on strenuous ascents or at icy altitudes, the right base layer plays a crucial role in comfort and performance. Since 1877, Helly Hansen has been developing equipment in Norway together with skiing and mountain sports professionals to meet precisely these challenges, repeatedly setting new standards with innovations such as the first technical base layer in the 1970s. With Lifa Merino KnitEvo, the brand continues this development: an evolution of the proven 2-in-1 base layer that combines LIFA® fibres next to the skin with merino wool on the outside.
The precise body-mapped construction of Lifa Merino KnitEvo uses different knitted zones: open-knit areas in high-heat zones specifically promote breathability and moisture management, while more densely knitted, lofty merino wool areas insulate and retain warmth where it is needed most. The new styles will launch in autumn/winter 2026 and offer enhanced performance for a wide range of winter activities, including skiing, ski touring, hiking and mountaineering.
LIFA® revolutionised the industry when it was first introduced in 1970. The material is based on a yarn technology that transports moisture away from the skin to the surface of the fabric, where it evaporates, keeping the wearer warm, dry and comfortable. Lifa Merino builds on this technology, with LIFA® fibres next to the skin and merino wool on the outside. Lifa Merino KnitEvo goes one step further by integrating innovative knitting technologies and a body-mapped construction.
Based on research and development and collaboration with skiing professionals, including elite athletes from Team Telenor Alpine Norway and Alpine Canada Alpin who rely on their high-performance equipment in harsh conditions and at high speeds, the new Lifa Merino KnitEvo Crew meets differing requirements for thermoregulation and moisture management across different body zones. An open-knit structure on the back and under the arms ensures optimal breathability, while RWS-certified ZQ merino wool provides targeted warmth at the shoulders and upper arms. Flat seams and raglan sleeves ensure a comfortable fit with unrestricted freedom of movement.
“Our Lifa Merino base layers have become a trusted choice for both professionals and skiing and outdoor enthusiasts looking for the ideal combination of comfort, warmth and performance. With Lifa Merino KnitEvo, we build on this expertise, delivering the same warmth and comfort we are known for, now with improved thermoregulatory performance. It is our most advanced base layer yet.”
Even before its market launch in autumn/winter 2026, the Lifa Merino KnitEvo Crew received the ISPO Award Gold, the highest honour in its category for particularly innovative, high-performance products.
ISPO Award jury statement
“LIFA® moisture transport, merino warmth and the body-mapped construction make the KnitEvo Crew a true winter performance upgrade.”
